From Snow Prep to Spring Planning
Winter isn’t quite done with us yet. With a snowstorm predicted for this weekend, we’re spending these cold days preparing the farm and protecting what’s growing. One of our big tasks is removing most of the row covers from the low tunnels over our winter-hardy plants. As cozy as they are, heavy snow can be too much weight for the tunnels, and we’d rather let the snow settle gently than risk them being crushed.
Inside, though, it’s already starting to feel like spring. We’ve been busy in the grow room, where 14 trays of tiny seedlings are now tucked under grow lights. It’s always a little magical to see those first green specks appear, a quiet reminder that the seasons keep moving forward, even when the ground outside is frozen.
We’re also deep into planning for Mother’s Day, carefully mapping out crops and crossing our fingers that we’ll have plenty of flowers ready to celebrate the moms in your life. It’s one of our favorite times of year on the farm, and we’re hopeful for a beautiful, bloom-filled season.
And we have some exciting news to share: this spring, we’ll be offering live plants for the first time, available exclusively at our farmers markets. These will be the very same plants we grow here on the farm, so if you’ve ever wished you could tuck a little Bear Meadows magic into your own garden or landscape, this is your chance.
Thank you, as always, for following along with us through the snow, the seedlings, and all the planning in between. We’ll keep you posted as the season unfolds.
With gratitude and muddy boots,
Kaz Smith
